Personal Statement

About Amy Pollack

I have always been an artist with diverse interests; my career in art has been as multi-layered as the paper and fabric hangings I have created.  Most recently, my large paper collages have become personal.  They refer to eugenics and responses to its oppression.  Other paper works have domestic themes: houses, pets, farm animals, plants.  My former home in Vermont influenced my hand–stitched scenes of local landscapes, of farmers and of their livestock.

Following my graduation from The Cooper Union and my marriage, I worked in a research laboratory for a few years while studying Art History at Brandeis University.  That experience led to an ongoing collaboration with my husband Robert Pollack.  We have co-authored two books on current scientific ideas, with his commentary on my illustrations.  The most recent of these books has been assigned as a reading in courses at Columbia University and at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Other interests of mine have included works in theater, crafts, and design.  My repertoire has included props for the LaMama Theater and papier-mache sculptures for various staged productions, along with designs for T-shirts for the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and posters for theatrical groups on Long Island.

I am currently a member of the University Seminars, and am on the Advisory Board of the Research Cluster of Science and Society, a program within the Center for Science and Society at Columbia University.  During this Covid Time I have illustrated two scientific papers.  In addition, the West End Synagogue Journal has two drawings of mine, as does the recently published book “Christian Ethics in Conversation.”
